Things To Do at Chapman State Park

Over 400 acres are available during established season for training of dogs, hunting and trapping. Dog training is only permitted on the day following Labor Day through March 31 in designated areas. Allegheny National Forest and State Game Land 29 adjacent to the park are open for hunting in designated areas. Hunting woodchucks, also known as groundhogs, is prohibited.

Chapman State Park offers a specialized area for group camping, cottages, two yurts, and over 80 campsites. The campsites have modern restrooms, showers and permit pets at designated campsites. The camping cottages sleep five people and have electric heat, a picnic table, fire ring, porch, electric lights and outlets.

Chapman Lake

The 68 acres of Chapman Lake offer swimming, fishing and boating. A sand beach opens in late-May through mid-September from 8am until sunset. Swim at your own risk and please follow posted rules. By the sand beach is the main picnic area that overlooks the lake. You may reserve five pavilions up to 11 months in advance for a fee, but the unreserved tables are first come – first serve basis. On the western side of Chapman Lake there is a boat launch and 45 seasonal mooring spaces. Registered campers’ mooring spaces are on the eastern shoreline.

Winter Activities

With over 300 miles of snowmobile trails, accessible from the park, a 7 acre sledding slope, ice fishing, 4.4 miles of ski trails and an ice skating pond, there are plenty of activities during the winter. For snowmobiling, there is ample trailer parking, heated restrooms, and a warming hut. The snowmobile trails open at the end of deer season in late December through March 31 and many trails are groomed depending on conditions. You must have your registration and stay on designated trails. Go sledding on the western side of the park that is lit until 10pm daily. Ice fishing for perch and trout is popular on Chapman Lake, but the ice thickness is not monitored. Numerous ski trails connect the national forest and state game land. Across from the park office is an ice skating rink that is lit until 9pm when conditions permit. Chapman State Park also hosts the annual Winterfest and sled dog races in late January each year.
